Crown Lifting by Arbor & Stone
Crown lifting removes a tree’s lowest branches to raise the base of the canopy. It lets more light reach lawns and borders, gives headroom over driveways and paths, and clears windows, roofs and street lights – without reducing the overall size of the tree.
It is often the simplest way to make a big tree easier to live with, and one of the most popular jobs we carry out for homeowners around Hampton and Twickenham.

Why crown lift a tree?
- More light for lawns, planting and the rooms of your house
- Headroom for cars, vans and pedestrians on drives and paths
- Clearance from roofs, windows, fences and garden buildings
- Opening up views under the canopy
- Meeting council requirements where branches overhang a road or pavement
How much clearance do I need?
Councils generally expect around 5.2 metres of clearance over roads used by vehicles and about 2.4 metres over pavements and footpaths. In gardens, the right height depends on what you want to use the space for – we will discuss this with you on site.
Crown lifting done properly
Where possible we remove smaller branches rather than large lower limbs, because big cuts close to the trunk leave wounds that are slow to seal and can lead to decay. A tree should always keep plenty of live crown, so on large trees we may suggest lifting in stages.
Crown lifting works well on pines, oaks, limes, sycamores and many conifers, and it is often combined with a light crown reduction or thinning in the same visit.

Crown Lifting – frequently asked questions
How high can a tree be crown lifted?
Enough to give the clearance you need – typically 2.4m over paths and around 5.2m over roads – while leaving the tree with plenty of live crown. On large trees this is sometimes done in stages.
Will crown lifting harm my tree?
Not when it is done correctly. We avoid removing large limbs where possible and make clean cuts that allow the tree to seal the wounds.
Can you crown lift a pine or conifer?
Yes. Pines in particular respond well to crown lifting and it is one of the best ways to bring light back into a garden shaded by them.
Can crown lifting be combined with other work?
Yes. It is often done in the same visit as a crown reduction, thinning, hedge trimming or tree removal.
