Stump Grinding by Arbor & Stone
A stump left behind after a tree has been felled is a trip hazard, gets in the way of mowing and landscaping, and can send up new shoots for years. Some stumps also become a food source for honey fungus, which can spread to other trees and shrubs in your garden.
Stump grinding is the quickest and cleanest way to remove a stump. A grinder chips the stump away below ground level, leaving the area ready for turf, planting or paving.

How stump grinding works
We use a compact stump grinder that can fit through most side gates and garden paths. The cutting wheel grinds the stump and the main roots around it down to woodchip, normally to around 150–300mm below ground – deep enough for turf or planting.
Before we start we check for buried pipes and cables, and we protect nearby windows, cars and paving from flying chips.
What happens to the chippings?
The ground-up stump leaves a pile of woodchip mixed with soil. We can backfill the hole with it and level it off, or take the chippings away and top the area with fresh soil ready for seed or turf – just let us know when we quote.
Stumps from any tree
We grind stumps from trees we have felled as part of a tree removal, and stumps left by other people – including old stumps that have been in the garden for years. If you are planning landscaping, we can grind the stumps and build the new garden as one job.
Recent stump grinding work

Stump Grinding – frequently asked questions
How deep do you grind a tree stump?
Normally around 150–300mm below ground level, which is deep enough to lay turf or plant over. We can go deeper where a patio or other construction is planned.
What happens to the chippings after stump grinding?
We can backfill the hole with them or remove them and top the area with soil. Let us know which you prefer when we quote.
Can you get a stump grinder through a side gate?
Usually yes – we use a narrow-access machine that fits through most garden gates and paths.
Can I plant a new tree where the old stump was?
It is better to plant a little to one side, because old roots and woodchip remain in the ground for some time.
Do you grind stumps from trees you did not fell?
Yes. We remove stumps of any age, whoever cut the tree down.
