Hedge Trimming by Arbor & Stone
Our hedge trimming service keeps hedges healthy, dense and looking their best. We trim and shape laurel, leylandii, privet, beech, yew, hornbeam, photinia and box, and reduce overgrown hedges that have got out of hand.
We bring the right equipment for the job – from hand shears for topiary to tripod ladders and long-reach trimmers for tall boundary hedges – and take all the cuttings away with us.

Regular hedge trimming
Most formal hedges look their best with one to three trims a year. Regular trimming encourages dense growth from the base, improves air flow and keeps hedges from spreading over paths, drives and neighbouring gardens. We can put you on a regular schedule so you never have to remember.
Hedge reduction and reshaping
If a hedge has become too tall or too wide, we can reduce its height and cut back the sides. Many species, such as laurel, privet and yew, regrow well even after hard cutting. Leylandii and most other conifers will not regrow from bare brown wood, so we plan reductions carefully to keep them green.
Very tall evergreen hedges can also cause problems with neighbours. Under the high hedges rules in the Anti-social Behaviour Act 2003, councils can step in where an evergreen hedge over two metres high is affecting a neighbour’s home or garden – we can help you bring a hedge back to a reasonable height.
Topiary and shaping
From clipped domes and cloud-pruned shrubs to standard “lollipop” trees, we shape topiary by hand to keep clean lines. Take a look at our gallery for examples of the domes, balls and shaped conifers we maintain around Hampton and Twickenham.
Ivy removal and commercial sites
We also cut back ivy and climbers from walls, fences and trees, and maintain hedges for churches, schools, businesses and residential blocks. For tall walls and buildings we can use a cherry picker (MEWP) for safe access.

Hedge Trimming – frequently asked questions
How often should a hedge be trimmed?
Most formal hedges need one to three trims a year. Fast growers such as privet and leylandii may need more; slower hedges like yew and beech usually need just one or two.
When is the best time to trim a hedge?
Late summer is ideal for most hedges, after the main bird nesting season. Light trims can be done at other times, but we always check for active nests first, as they are protected by law.
Can you reduce the height of a tall leylandii hedge?
Yes, we can reduce the height. Leylandii does not regrow from bare brown wood, so we take care not to cut the sides back beyond the green growth.
Do you take the hedge cuttings away?
Yes. All waste is collected and removed, and paths, drives and lawns are blown clean.
Do you trim hedges for businesses and churches?
Yes. We maintain hedges and boundaries for commercial and community sites as well as private homes.
